1. I am in a first grade classroom and the lesson I observed in the classroom was when the students created their Valentine’s Day bag for a math lesson. The teacher presented the project by first talking about all the shapes that needed to be included on the bag so they were covering Geometry. Then she went on to discuss how the bag should be symmetrical which covers the art and math section. The students were to cut out different shapes to create a Valentine’s Day themed house on their bag with lots of different shapes. The students worked using their imagination and came up with some very creative ideas for their houses. To integrate this lesson a little bit more I would possibly go over a few more art terms and maybe let each student show the rest of the students their work so they can be proud of their work.
Art Classroom
2. When I observed the art classroom at my host school they were learning about painting a portrait. The objective of the lesson was for students to learn techniques that will help them paint a portrait. Another objective of the lesson was for students to learn how to mix different color paints to create colors they could use. Some of the strategies the teacher used was to have the students all sit in the carpet in rows and she stood up and gave a demonstration of different paints to mix to make certain colors and she demonstrated painting a portrait. She let the students ask questions when she was finished with her demonstration. The students were very engaged in the lesson. They found the mixing of the paints very interesting and loved watching the teacher paint. They asked all sorts of questions about the painting. The students would have trouble sitting still on the carpet but the teacher would stop and have them sit down again so everyone could see. She would not continue with the lesson if students talked out and did not wait to be called on. Also, when a student acted out she had them go sit in the corner and watch the lesson without beings surrounded by his friends.
